TRAFe Transparent Iron Oxide

Product Description
Although nanometer transparent iron oxide pigments are inorganic in view of  synthetic process and performance characteristics, they also own properties of organic pigments. The primary particles of transparent iron oxides  pigments are nanometer sized, only 0.01-0.015μm, much smaller than opaque iron oxides'. The small particle sizes of transparent iron oxide results in pigments with high surface areas (about 128m2/g) and therefore, high oil absorption values( 80-100). By comparison, the oil absorption figures of phthalocyanine blue is 56, phthalocyanine green 46, carbazole violet 84, opaque iron oxide 18. The particle size of transparent iron oxide pigments is smaller than half light wavelength, so it is transparent when fully dispersed in mediums to make continueous films. Due to their small particle sizes, nanometer transparent iron oxides are totally different from the opaque iron oxides in aspect of light absorption and scattering. Thus they have brighter colors than opaque iron oxides.

Product Application
1. Automotive paints: Transparent iron oxide pigments are widely used in combination with aluminium or pearl pigments to produce golden effect in solvent and water based systems. In conjunction with more expensive transparent organic pigments , Transparent iron oxide pigments are used to make transparent paints of various colors.
2. Wood coatings: soft color, fadeless, applied in wood coating to protect wood from ultraviolet radiation.
3. Industrial Paints: applied over metal to produce gold or copper effects. They are widely applicable in can coatings: interior and exterior.
4. Printing Inks: vivid transparent colors, suitable for printing on aluminum foils.
5. Artist Colors: colors can be kept for long periods of time
6. Plastic packing: used in PET or PP plastic to make beverage and drug bottles.
7. Cosmetics: applied in the cosmetics industry because of non-toxicity and strong absorption of ultraviolet radiation.
8. Powder coatings: for transparent iron oxide pigment red, no change in color when the temperature is under 300°C

 Transparent Iron Oxide Dispersions
"TRAFe" Transparent Iron Oxide Dispersions, with color of yellow, red, blue, green, black and brown, can be applied in both solvent-borne (SBA, LSB) and water-borne (CSEW) systems. SBA solvent-borne dispersions display high compatibility with acrylic acid, polyester, polyurethane, silicone, fluoro and vinyl ester resins in high and middle polar systems. It is especially suitable to be applied in automobile and industrial paints. LSB type dispersions are especially suitable for long-oil alkyd, plant oil, etc in low polar systems. It is specially recommended to be used in wood coatings. CSEW water-borne dispersions contain no resins and flux, and possess high compatibility and fluidity. They are specially recommended to be used in water-borne alkyd, polyurethane and water-borne acrylic acid and polymer emulsion based water-borne systems. The "TRAFe" dispersions exhibit high levels of color strength, transparency and UV absorption properties combined with excellent weather fastness, heat durability and alkaline-resistance. They are widely applied in high quality automotive paints, wood finishes, construction paints and industrial coatings.

Recommended addition procedure   
Speckles may form when add transparent iron oxide dispersions into high concentrated binder, which is caused by the fast reaction due to a rapid change of concentration. To solve the problem, please take following the two-step process.
(1) Take certain quantity of transparent iron oxide dispersion and add solvent of the system to lower dispersion’s viscosity. The quantity of the solvent or water need to lower the pigment loading in the dispersion within 10%. Take right amount of binder, which is 5%-10% of the dispersion quantity, and add it into the above dispersion slowly while stirring in order to obtain low concentrated solution.
(2) Stir slowly and add the above obtained low viscous solution into the remaining binder.

Storage and Caution
The dispersions should be stored in well-sealed containers at a temperature under 35°C and the storage period should not exceed 12months. The dispersions should be stirred evenly before being used and should be used up as soon as possible after unpacking. As for LSB type dispersion, when the storage temperature is above 35°C volatility of solvent or the chemical reaction of the binder may cause formation of a skin on the surface of the dispersion and the skin should be removed before use.
